Crossroads

Those moments when the way divides & choices take us very sharply one way versus another. In the early 1980s, plans to leave 'Policy work' to be a painter waited for 20 plus years — filled with children, various businesses, consulting, community non-profit work & many creative endeavors (but no time to paint). Then I took a painting class. Again, another spectacular junction I found that I needed art to breathe and a new life in Mendocino... Now just 2 years later, I am a full time painter, sculpture & artist
And I am having the time of my life!

'Big Picture' Abstractions are passionate voices in my art, while my paintings speak to the wonder & joy of being! Chaos theory, connectivity, string theory, open space and energy flow; just as likely is imagining the pulse inside a tree. From figurative, landscape to pure abstraction, my love of color, light and form explore 'cosmic' themes. And after 50 years with words dominating, I find incredible magic in material, mass, color, & form and an inspired sense of possibilities!

I hope I am an inspiration to others. There are so many of us, those who set aside artistic passions to pursue the 'practical realities' of life. Perhaps, others can see that 50 years old is not too late to dive back in! The beat of your heart does not go away, that creativity doesn't fade JUMP IN! The water is fine and WOW!

Janet Self has had work in various shows at the Mendocino Art Center, Scharffenberger Cellars, Mendo Bistro and North Coast Gallery as well as special community benefits.
