statement I am fascinated with textiles and decorative designs from various cultures including the ikats of Central Asia, kimono designs of Japan, and the fabric and wallpaper designs of the Arts & Crafts movement. In addition, the Wiener Wekstatte of Vienna (1910–1932) provides marvelous inspiration for both design and unconventional palettes. I like combining the figure with these designs so that ground and figure are equally salient, and in some instances, the ground overshadows the figure. The designs are drawn free hand and I don't intend them to be exact replicas of past work, but rather to establish a resonance with the past. All the figures were drawn from life in the Figure Drawing Collective of Mendocino. |
